EN 15804 is the rulebook behind every EPD in European construction. It was built around wood-based products that decompose or get incinerated, so it requires biogenic carbon removals to be neutralised in the accounting, no exceptions.
That logic doesn't hold for biochar locked into a stable construction matrix. The Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF) already recognises this kind of storage as permanent. EN 15804 doesn't, which means construction products with biochar can't show their full negative emissions profile.
This open letter sets out three specific asks for CEN/TC 350 and the European Commission, along with the guardrails needed to keep any change credible: full value-chain quantification, named liability, independent auditing, public registries.
