Technical Field Tours

12 June 2026

Explore Biochar in Action. As part of Biochar Summit 2026, we are bringing back field tours with three exciting options. A tour ticket gives you firsthand insights into real-world facilities and biochar-related industrial processes.

Check out the options below:

Tour 1

Holcim Cement Production in Mannersdorf

This tour will visit Austria’s largest cement plant — Holcim’s production facility in Mannersdorf, AT. Founded 130 years ago, it is today a forward-looking, international model for cement production, sustainability and the circular economy. Join this tour to learn about the scale and technicalities of cement production. See how biochar is defossilizing the process by replacing fossil coal, and discuss how biochar's production and application will align, integrate and drive carbon removals in construction materials. This is a half-day tour.

Tour 2

Biochar & Cement Production

This full-day tour offers a direct look at how biochar production and cement manufacturing operate at an industrial scale and where they begin to intersect. The day starts at PurEnergy Holding GmbH in Gänserndorf, where participants will visit a working biochar facility built on SYNCRAFT’s technology. The plant converts biomass into multiple outputs, including biochar and renewable electricity supplied to the local district heating network. Visitors will see how feedstock is processed, how thermochemical conversion takes place, and how energy streams are integrated into local infrastructure.

The group will then travel to Mannersdorf for a guided visit to Holcim's cement plant, the largest in Austria. The tour will walk through key stages of cement production, from raw material preparation to kiln operations, offering a clear view of the scale and complexity of one of the most energy-intensive industries and how biochar is already making an impact toward defossilization and carbon removals.

Tour 3

Bio-residues to Biochar Utilization

This full-day tour offers a practical look at how biochar is produced and applied in soil and agricultural markets.

Participants will visit Sonnenerde GmbH in Riedlingsdorf, one of Europe’s early industrial biochar producers, with continuous production since 2012. The facility operates an NGE pyrolysis unit integrated into a composting system, using woody screening residues as feedstock to produce high-quality biochar at around 700°C.

The visit highlights how excess heat is reused across multiple process steps, including drying sewage sludge and feedstock, as well as how by-products such as ammonium sulphate are recovered and reused within the system. Participants will also see how biochar is further processed into applications such as Terra Preta substrates, feed char, and soil products.

A short presentation by CULA will provide additional insight into their work and contributions at the facility.
